A pilonidal sinus is an infected tract or tunnel that forms in the skin near the top of the buttocks crease, usually between 4 and 5 centimeters above the anus. It occurs when hair follicles become trapped under the skin, leading to inflammation and infection.

• Abscess formation: If an abscess forms within the pilonidal sinus, surgery is typically required to drain the pus and remove the infected tissue.
